BCO1
BCO1 encodes beta-carotene oxygenase 1, the intestinal enzyme that performs the rate-limiting central cleavage of dietary beta-carotene and other provitamin-A carotenoids into retinal, the precursor of active vitamin A. Common BCO1 variants, including rs7501331, alter cleavage efficiency and explain much of the person-to-person variation in how effectively plant-based beta-carotene is converted into usable vitamin A.
