rs713598

rs713598 is a G>C missense variant in TAS2R38 that produces a proline-to-alanine substitution at amino-acid position 49 (Pro49Ala) of the bitter-taste receptor. Together with rs1726866 (Ala262Val) and rs10246939 (Val296Ile), it forms the classic TAS2R38 diplotype: the PAV haplotype yields a fully functional receptor with strong PTC/PROP bitter sensitivity, while AVI is a poorly functional 'non-taster' haplotype. It is one of three markers used here to characterize bitter-taste sensitivity to compounds such as PTC and PROP.
