rs4072037 is a multiallelic variant in MUC1 at the gene-rich MUC1/TRIM46 locus. On the GRCh38 forward strand, C is the reference allele and the reviewed common comparison is C/T. Each C copy was linked to about 0.010 mmol/L lower serum magnesium on average. Separate studies show that the variant affects MUC1 splicing, but the magnesium-causal gene and mechanism are not established. The studies did not measure magnesium absorption or supplement response, and calls containing the unstudied A or G allele are outside the reviewed map.
