ZFHX3 (zinc finger homeobox 3, also known as ATBF1) encodes a large zinc-finger/homeodomain transcription factor that regulates gene expression programs involved in cell differentiation, including myogenic and neuronal differentiation, and modulates signaling pathways such as AR and TGF-beta/BMP. Common variants at the ZFHX3 locus are among the most consistently replicated GWAS signals for atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, likely acting through effects on cardiac gene expression and atrial tissue remodeling.
