SLC2A9 encodes GLUT9, a urate transporter expressed on renal proximal tubule cells and in the liver that moves uric acid across cell membranes as part of the kidney's reabsorption/excretion balance. SLC2A9 (tagged here by rs7442295) is the single strongest common genetic determinant of serum uric acid and gout risk identified in GWAS, with a well-documented sex-differential effect that is larger in women, thought to reflect estrogen's influence on GLUT9 isoform expression.
