FTO

FTO encodes an RNA demethylase that removes N6-methyladenosine marks from RNA. The common rs9939609 marker sits in a non-coding regulatory region and is strongly associated with small differences in average body weight, but the causal gene and mechanism at this locus are not settled. Small meal studies link the A version to reduced fullness after eating; larger randomized trials show that it does not change how well weight-loss programs work.
