FSHB encodes the beta subunit of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), the pituitary gonadotropin that binds its receptor on ovarian granulosa cells to drive follicle development and estradiol production. The variant rs11031006, located upstream of the FSHB promoter, alters FSHB expression and has been associated in genome-wide association studies with lower FSH and higher LH and testosterone levels, a hormonal pattern implicated in polygenic risk for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
