ADCY2

ADCY2 encodes adenylate cyclase 2, a membrane-bound enzyme that converts ATP into the second messenger cAMP downstream of G-protein-coupled receptor signaling, including the olfactory receptor signaling cascade in sensory neurons of the nasal epithelium. Variants in the ADCY2 region on chromosome 5 (near rs116058752) have been identified in genome-wide olfactory-identification studies as associated with differences in the ability to recognize the smell of orange, an effect reported to be sex-specific (seen mainly in women).
